  • Summary:
    A Spanish SME specialised in ICT solutions and with wide experience in European projects is working on an H2020-DT-ICT-03-2020 proposal to explore and promote the use of cyber-physical systems (CPS) and robots for small-scale production of different types of products, including discrete (e.g. electronic devices, toys, shoes) and continuous (e.g. liquid, fabric, powder) manufacturing but also construction. SMEs and mid-caps interested in CPS are sought for demonstration tasks.
  • Description:
    Competitiveness and profitability characterise modern manufacturing processes, in which mass production is given way to mass customisation. Global marketplaces can be seen, built on rich e-commerce platforms and made-to-order product configuration. This is making a great era for consumers, as they can enjoy customised products brought to the door of their house, or several versions of the same product at different prices, having a wide spectrum of products for selecting one or many of them. However, this process is challenging for manufacturers as they need to produce complex products at small-scale production – i.e., derived from the large number of product variants and/or high customisation degree – which requires high flexibility at production level while having an increasing pressure to raise productivity rates and reduce waste, energy and resource consumption.
    The aim of this project is demonstrating and showcasing how the adoption, adaptation and integration of advanced digital technologies can improve manufacturing processes at SMEs and mid-caps in different sectors. For this purpose, a new generation of autonomous and cognitive robots will be deployed on the factory floor being managed and continuously monitored by a cyber-physical system (CPS) that collects, processes and exploits data from several sources (e.g., sensors, actuators, etc.) to effectively plan and control the production line towards the optimisation of the overall performance.
