    A Spanish University has developed a building benchmarking tool for energy efficiency improvement, energy controlling and forecasting in buildings using simplified models that calculates energy parameters. The tool is based on spreadsheet implementation, reducing license cost and making possible its use in many different systems. Companies or public organizations are sought for services and/or research cooperation agreement, in order to use and improve the system.
  • Description:
    The research team has developed an innovative system that allows benchmarking, evaluation and forecasting of energy efficiency in buildings using common parameters such as location and energy costs.
    Usually, energy efficiency ratios used in buildings require for its calculation information that is not available or that need a high effort to be processed, both in time and economic terms, these include building typologies, plans, schedules etc.

    The team has developed a methodology and system that allows, both enterprises and public organizations (hospitals, governments, etc), to calculate energy efficiency parameters for the buildings easily. The building benchmarking tool for energy efficiency improvement uses, as main data, energy costs (invoicing systems), therefore, reducing cost and making it easy to calculate these ratios. The obtained data can be used for many practical purposes, such as:
    • Detect buildings with abnormal energy consumption
    • Compare performance between buildings
    • Detect energy efficiency opportunities
    • Predict energy consumption under different conditions
    • Establish energy efficiency policies
    • Etc.

    In comparison with other tools the proposed one does not require energy specialized personnel or the use of complex input data, making the solution universally applicable. Moreover, advanced characteristics and options are available in the tool, such as predictive models using neuronal networks and big data analysis. The system uses, as main interface, a spreadsheet, reducing license cost (open source spreadsheets are available) and making possible its use in any computer.

    Potential R&D partners, public administrations or companies are sought for both, research cooperation and / or services agreement. Moreover, it will be desirable to compare the system with foreign organizations to test and improve the tool for its use in other regions, including the adaptation and translation to the specific local conditions (energy companies, language, climatic conditions, etc.) in order to validate and improve the global performance of the proposed system.

    The research team is also interested in developing a project in areas related with energy efficency, building efficiency, etc, in Horizon 2020.
